Our History

Community Health Centers of King County (CHCKC) has its roots in three community based health centers that were formed independently between 1971 and 1983: Valley Community Clinic in Renton established in 1971; South County Community Clinic established in Auburn in 1981; and the Green River Community Health Center established in Kent in 1983. Concerned citizens from these three communities gathered to address the health care needs of the under-served populations in South King County. These three health centers merged on January 1, 1987 to form the South King County Community Health Centers (SKCCHC).

During the first half of 1987, South King County Community Health Centers worked with representatives of the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health, United Way and five municipalities in East King County to assess the need for primary health care services for the low income populations in the region. After determining that the low-income populations in East King County had very few primary health care resources available to them, SKCCHC, with financial support from local cities, King County and United Way, established a community health center in Bellevue in November 1987. To better reflect the expanded geographical area served by the organization, the agency’s name was changed to Community Health Centers of King County on January 1, 1988. A community health center was established in Bothell in October 1988 and in 1993 the Federal Way Community Health Center. In 2006, CHCKC opened its first school-based health center at the Tyee Campus in SeaTac. A new clinic at SeaTac is scheduled to open in early 2007.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to provide complete primary health care services to the people in our communities, with special attention to the needs of the medically under-served populations of King County.  Our services encompass not only treatment and prevention of illness but also health education, behavioral health service, outreach, interpretation and a variety of other services that our patients want and need.

Our corporate philosophy is that all people are entitled to complete, affordable, quality health care.  In adopting this philosophy we affirm our respect for our patients and our commitment to treat all patients with care and dignity.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is comprised of community members, 51% of whom are patients of the health centers.  The Board strives to be representative of our patient population in terms of age, sex, race/ethnicity and geographic location.

Members of the Board of Directors serve as volunteers in support of the organization’s stated mission, goals and work plan.  The Board is a “working board.”

We are always recruiting for interested community members to serve on the Board of Community Health Centers of King County.
